Harnessing the Power of Light for Better Health

Since our inception in 1993, we've had one mission: to help those struggling with low energy, poor sleep, and depleted mental well-being. That means creating light therapy lamps designed, tested, and proven to effectively trigger serotonin production.

Our History

1993

Day-Light Technologies is Founded

After moving from sunny California to the darker climate of Nova Scotia, Canada, Michael Speeraw saw an opportunity to create clinical-grade light therapy lamps.

He would partner with Columbia University researcher and founder of the Center for Environmental Therapeutics, Dr. Michael Terman, to develop a light therapy lamp that met the criteria for research-quality lamps that anyone could afford.

The first Day-Light lamp was the Day-Light 10,000 Classic. It featured CFL bulbs, and an all-metal design. Speeraw's drive to innovate and Dr. Terman's expertise would pave the way for Day-Light to create innovative and highly effective therapy lamps.

1995

The Day-Light 10,000 F/X is Launched

Day-Light launches the 10,000 F/X, a smaller, lighter, and more portable version of the 10,000. This lamp featured an adjustable arm and clamp that latched onto the side of the surface it was attached to.

1996

Day-Light is Used to Study the Effect of Light Therapy on Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder

This study explored the effectiveness of light therapy for a patient with Non-24-Hour Sleep-Wake Disorder (N24SWD), a rare condition where the body's internal clock runs on a different schedule than the 24-hour day-night cycle. Using a Day-Light light therapy lamp, the participant initially experienced improved sleep-wake synchronization. However, the positive effects were short-lived, suggesting that longer light therapy durations might be necessary for individuals with a significant circadian rhythm difference.

While light therapy wasn't a complete solution in this case, it offered temporary relief from daytime sleepiness and improved alertness, highlighting its potential as a valuable tool for managing N24SWD symptoms.

1999

Day-Light Technologies Becomes UpLift Technologies

As his passion for healthcare evolved, Michael Speeraw would introduce a series of Uplift seats and commodes. These devices were designed to aid in sitting and standing for those with balance and strength issues. With these new product expansions, Day-Light would change its name to UpLift Technologies.

2000

CAN-SAD Study Shows Promising Results Using the Day-Light 10,000

A clinical study conducted in Canada sought to evaluate the efficacy of light therapy using the Day-Light 10,000 lightbox as compared to an antidepressant in the treatment of seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

Through a double-blind, randomized trial, it was discovered that both treatments yielded similar results in alleviating symptoms and achieving remission.

Light therapy demonstrated a swifter response onset and was associated with fewer adverse effects. Ultimately, the study emphasized that the selection between these two treatment options should be based on individual patient preferences and pertinent clinical considerations.

2000

The Day-Light Classic is Launched

The Day-Light Classic was a revolutionary product born out of our relentless pursuit of innovation. This exceptional device featured three CFL bulbs and a generously sized face, setting it apart as an instant success. Its meticulously crafted design, backed by clinical expertise and patented BrightZone technology, ensured that users could bask in the recommended 10,000 LUX of light from a comfortable sitting distance.

This lamp was featured in an educational video by Sunybrook Hospital out of Canada.

Day-Light Partners with Libraries to Make Light Therapy Accessible

In an effort to ensure that light therapy is easily accessible to everyone, we initiated partnerships with libraries across Canada and the USA. Through this program, library members have the opportunity to visit participating libraries and experience light therapy using our lamps. Additionally, they can even borrow the lamps to use at home. This initiative is our way of not only making light therapy more accessible but also introducing the treatment to individuals and allowing them to try it out to see if it has a positive impact.

Today, our lamps can be found in numerous libraries, including London, Winnipeg, Ohio, Dartmouth, and more.

2007

The Day-Light Sky is Introduced

As the need for bright light therapy increased, we introduced the Day-Light Sky. This contemporary therapy lamp featured a smaller head that delivered the clinical-grade effectiveness of the Day-Light Classic. The Sky was born out of a desire to create a clinical-grade lamp that was more stylish and took up less room.

Study Finds the Day-Light Classic Valuable in Addressing Seasonal Mood Disorders by Influencing Brain Chemistry

The study's findings indicate that the Day-Light Classic may significantly address seasonal mood disorders by influencing brain chemistry.

Great light with many other functions

We love the lamp. It was given as a gift to my husband who spends a lot of time reasoning at his desk. It has given him sufficient light, and I think more energy as he has more simulated sun light during our dark winters

Christopher S, Bright Health 360

Does exactly what it is supposed to do

In Upper NW Minnesota, we encounter long cold weather where natural sunlight is limited. This light has helped already, and in fact I have purchased 2 more for family members.

Powerful and very sunny

My old SAD lamp gave out. This new one is amazing and so happy it has the phone charger and alarm clock. I've been using it since Christmas and notice my energy back to summer levels. Just wish it would get warmer outside :)
